Today we had our school meeting for Miss A starting kindergarten next year. In WA you have to be 4 before July to start and she missed it by 5 days. The good thing being she had the extra time to prepare. She has been going to a very good private 3 year old kindy for a year so they have prepared her as much as possible. The meeting went so well it blew me away.
I talked for nearly 90 minutes and was listened to and respected.
We discussed the best way to get her more aide time. The standard set by the Education Department was 0.2 or one day.
To assist in getting more time they need to know the worst case scenario. So we talked about toileting, running away, safety, communication, following introduction and so much more. I think she will try her best at kindy but some times it all becomes too much. The sensory side takes over and nothing else matters.
She has been looking forward to starting school since J did so its not a big step for her.
At the end of the meeting we discussed our family situation an what help we are getting. We have never bad respite in 2 years and we don't have a Local Area Coordinator. Both simple basic things for a family with one special needs child, essential when you have two.
Everyone seemed shocked and upset on my behalf and they have vowed to follow it up. They have said they would talk to their member of parliament and ask why we have been neglected.
After fighting for months it feels great to have someone on my side fighting with me.
